Shirley Chastain Obituary
Shirley (Cooper) Chastain, age 90, passed away on June 2, 2026, in Ardmore, Okla. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, on Saturday, June 6, 2026, in The Chapel at Griffin~Hillcrest with Pastor Larry Murray officiating. Interment to follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Shirley was born on November 21, 1935, to Ray Cooper and Ethel (Roy) Cooper in Southwest City, MO. Shirley attended a small country school called Greenwood Schools. At age 18 she moved to Anderson and stayed with a friend Twila Martin and her husband James. She worked at the Chicken Plant in Anderson until her and Clyde were married. She met Clyde when he was in the Army serving with her brother Donald Cooper. Clyde came home with Donald on leave. The two wrote to each other for three years while he served. Once he was discharged, he moved to Ardmore where he began working for the city. He then returned to Missouri and the two were married on October 5, 1957, at Full Gospel Church in Anderson, Missouri a union that would last 49 wonderful years. After they were married, they made their home in Ardmore, Okla. Over the years Shirley took on several jobs. She worked for Pruitt’s Grocery as a meat cutter and took on seasonal work in a pecan company breaking shells.
Later she began a career with Uniroyal Tires, later known as Michelin, until her retirement in 1997. She attended House of Prayer until her health did not allow her anymore.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Clyde Chastain, who passed on Sept 16, 2006 Infant brother, Paul Cooper, brothers, Donald Cooper, David Cooper, Kenny Cooper, Louis Cooper, Jack Cooper, and Bill Cooper, sisters, Geraldine Booth, and Frances Sutton, sister in law, Melba Hammon, brother in laws, Dewy Chastain and Nubby Chastain and daughter in law, Liesa Chastain.
Shirley is survived by her son, Michael Chastain, grandchildren, Christina Rushing and husband, Josh Rushing, and Amanda Chastain, great-grandson, Cory Rushing, sister in law, Geraldine Lewellen and brother in law, Bobby Chastain, and numerous nephews and nieces.
Those serving as honorary pallbearers will be Steven Reece, Shane Reece, Johnny Hammon, David Lewellen, Jay Cooper, Joe Cooper and Rickey Lewellen.
