Ramona Rose Wheeler Obituary

February 12, 1953 – March 5, 2026

Ramona Rose Wheeler, known lovingly as Mona, was born on February 12, 1953, in Watonga, Oklahoma. She passed away peacefully on March 5, 2026, in Ardmore, Oklahoma, surrounded by her loved ones.

In 2006, Mona made Ardmore her home, where she built lasting friendships that became an integral part of her life. She would help anyone in need without hesitation, caring for and loving her friends as deeply as she loved her family. Her heart was profoundly loving and giving, always open to those around her, and these enduring bonds reflected the genuine warmth she shared with everyone she met.

Mona was a proud and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose family brought her immense joy and pride. She also held a deep and abiding faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, which guided her life and brought her comfort and strength.

She carried immense pride in her Native American heritage as a fourth-generation descendant of survivors of the Sand Creek Massacre. Her mother, Anna Grace Magpie, was the daughter of Julia Big Horse, who was in turn the daughter of Wooly Dog—one of the last known eyewitness survivors of the tragic events at Sand Creek in 1864.

As the youngest and last surviving member of her immediate family, Mona was preceded in death by her father, Archie Wheeler; her mother, Anna Grace Magpie; her two brothers, Dale and Darrel Wheeler; and her three sisters, Norma Wheeler, Mary Addison, and Elsie Morlan.

Mona is survived by her daughter, Kristina Mackey of Ardmore; her son, Allen Mackey of Ardmore; her eight grandchildren: Jayvin Lehr and wife Jamie Holcom, Nikolas Lehr and wife Alyssa Lehr, Ian Lehr, Clayton Sharp, River Mackey, Hunter Mackey, Sklyer Mackey, and Rayne Mackey; and her two great-grandsons, Kyle Lehr and Andres Mackey. She also cherished several honorary grandchildren who were dear friends of her grandchildren and part of her extended family circle.

Mona’s legacy of love, generosity, unwavering faith, family devotion, and cherished friendships will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 16, 2026, at Griffin-Hillcrest Funeral Home. A luncheon with close friends and family will follow.
