Obituary of William Robert Smith

William Robert “Bill” Smith, age 93, passed away on November 19, 2017, at The Ardmore Veterans Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, November 22, 2017, at New Covenant Fellowship Church with Brother Bill Freeman officiating. Interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

 

William was born on January 15, 1924, to William Lafayette Smith and Mable (Burrows) Smith in Shawnee, Okla. Bill moved from Shawnee, Okla. to Leflore, Okla. where he married his childhood sweetheart Othell Wonderline Smith. They had a short term marriage of only 72 ½ years! Bill joined the Army in 1943 until 1945. After the service he worked for the Rock Island RR for a few years. Then he farmed in SE Okla. Later he worked for the Ammunition Department in McAlester, Okla., as an investigator. From there he moved to Ada, Okla. and then to Ardmore, Okla. While in Ardmore, Bill worked for the Army reserve 4003 and then went to work in 1980 for the Internal Revenue Service. He retired from the IRS at the age of 55.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one daughter, Judy Arlene Stepp.

 

William is survived by his son, Larry Don Smith, of Ardmore, Okla. Six grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
